Lighten-Up! Spring Is Coming! But Do It Inexpensively.

It’s time to lighten up your spaces and it’s easy to do it inexpensively and it is easy if you know how.

Lighten-Up Spring

I have a belief – ‘cozy-up’ for the winter and ‘lighten-up’ for the spring, and I learned to do it on the cheap. So let’s roll up our sleeves and start with the most important area of your house – the living area.

In the late fall when the weather starts to get a little cooler, I advise clients to ‘cozy-up’ their area by moving their furniture closer together and have it facing the fireplace. Then bring in some dark rich colors and the room will automatically feel warmer and safer. I call that a ‘cozy-up’ arrangement. Well in the spring, we want to ‘lighten-up’ our rooms and make everything feel like a big breath of fresh air. Here are a few ways to make your room look like new without spending a fortune.

cozy up for fall

  • Wash those windows and blinds. Okay, I know it’s not the most glamorous thing you thought I was going to say, but removing all the dust and grime from the windows is going to produce more light. More light equals a brighter room.
  • Push your furniture out. Give your room a whole new look. I have heard people say that there is only one way that they can have their furniture. I have yet to come across a room where I couldn’t change the arrangement. Push your furniture around and see if you can do something different, if not, well that’s what re-designers do. We come in and give your room a whole new look using your own furnishings and accessories and help you get a whole new room inexpensively.
  • Change out your lampshades. For a wonderful mood booster, a new lampshade can’t be beat. For myself, I use dark wine pagoda-shaped shades in the winter and in the spring I bring out lovely cream-colored barrel shades. I use the same bases but get a totally different look! A number of stores have really unique and fun lamp shades that they sell. Target, Homegoods and World Market had the nicest selection that I have seen.
  • Change out your pillows. Some people have kept the same pillows on their couch since the day they bought it! Enjoy a day out with friends, drinking coffee and shopping for new pillows. Pillows are like eye candy in a room and the selection in the stores is phenomenal! They are like little pieces of movable art! Try Pier1 or Homegoods if you don’t know where to start. Also try using a light-colored throw on a dark chair to instantly brighten up an area.
  • Change out the mats in your picture frames. Dark mats work great in the winter but changing them with light-colored mats will make your pictures look brand new! Also try moving your pictures around. Remember – nothing is permanent.
  • Pick out a few new items from the thrift store. They give you an instant boost of change and sometimes can even inspire you to do something totally different. I recently found a two dollar small birdcage at a local thrift store. I already owned two other cages so I made a sweet display on my side table and it totally changed the look of my area!
